Life drawing

Collection of portrait and figure drawings from life art course, University of Dundee

These traditional illustrations are the collection of artwork from the life art module offered by the University of Dundee. Some of these artworks were real-life observations, while some were remotely due to Covid restrictions.

It was my first time learning how to draw figures and portraits from real-life observation. As my background is in Biomedical science, I have taken an Anatomy course from Mahidol University in Thailand. In addition, I also took an anatomy course at the University of Dundee. Therefore, I was able to apply that knowledge to my artworks and improved the anatomical accuracy.

It started with a warm-up exercise. I needed to look at the models and draw them continually without looking at the paper for 2 minutes. This exercise helped me capture the sense of line and figure of the human body. Here is the Contour Drawing in A4 paper

I wanted to avoid using the eraser, so I practised drawing with a black and blue pen in different paper sizes (A3, A4). As a result, I had more understanding of tone and body figure. These are examples.

After receiving positive feedback from my classmate, I gained more confidence to experiment with a mixture of media to practice and express my creativity. So, I started to draw a portrait in A4 paper and painted it with gouache and watercolour.

Moreover, I also experimented with dip pen and ink to express the model's emotion. These media, by far, have become my favourite tools of painting.
